Focus Area Science Technology fellowship 2019

With a view to enhance the spread of Science and Technology in the specific regions of the country, the Inter Academy Panel has initiated the Focus Area Science Technology Summer Fellowship (or FAST-SF). The FAST-SF programme is exclusively for students/teachers studying/working in North Eastern States of India, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jammu & Kashmir. 

Applications are invited from interested students and teachers for these fellowships from universities and colleges affiliated to UGC/AICTE/MCI/Accredited Institutions of State Universities from these states. The application should include: (a) the application form in the prescribed format; (b) scanned copies of marks sheets from class X till the last examination; (c) a write-up (in about 150–250 words) as to what the applicant wants to learn and achieve. Student applicants should provide the e-mail id of one of their teachers or HoD familiar with their work. The Academy will approach them for a recommendation letter in the prescribed format. The selected candidate should work with the assigned guide for two months any time during the calendar year, preferably during the summer. 

About 200 fellowships are offered every year to students and teachers working in these states to work with scientists associated with the three Academies (IASc, INSA and NASI) anywhere in the country. 5-Days Hands-on Workshop on Molecular Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Pune, India

We have planned a series of five days basic/beginners workshops with practical hands-on training on the topics from recombinant DNA technology, PCR and bioinformatics. The biology and bioinformatics contents are interwoven in such a manner that it would help a molecular biologist to find solutions to real time problems in lab and a bioinformatician to understand the laboratory aspects.

1. Recombinant DNA Technology & PCR:
  • Plasmid DNA Isolation followed by agarose gel electrophoresis
  • Restriction Digestion followed by agarose gel electrophoresis
  • Ligation followed by agarose gel electrophoresis
  • DNA Extraction from Agarose Gel
  • Preparation of Competent Cells
  • Plasmid Transformation in Competent Cells and plating on LBA plates
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) followed by agarose gel electrophoresis
2. Bioinformatics part for the above:
  • Bioinformatics of DNA databases
  • Sequence Analysis: Pairwise sequence alignment, Multiple sequence alignment, BLAST
  • Designing of PCR primers
  • In-silico restriction digestion, transcription, reverse transcription using bioinformatics tools
  • Searching for homologous and paralogous sequences
3. Genomics Data Visualization:
  • Browsing and comparing human and mouse genomic data with the help of NCBI Genome viewer and UCSC Genome browser.
